April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
Protecting Children is Everyone's Business
The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Warren County joins other citizens and organizations across the county in recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Council partners with county and city government, schools, libraries, businesses, health care providers, churches, and concerned citizens to share the message that Protecting Children is Everyone's Business.
Research shows that children who experience abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction are at greater risk for poor health, learning and behavior outcomes. A 2012 Iowa study revealed that adults who had four or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including child abuse, were more than twice as likely to rate their health poorly and face activity limitations compared to adults with zero traumatic experiences. Those with a higher number of ACEs were nearly five times more likely to be diagnosed with clinical depression, four times more likely to have lung disease, and nearly three times as likely to have heart disease.
Every child deserves a happy childhood and most parents really want that for their children. But, parenting can be a tough job. The stress of parenting can be overwhelming and sometimes leads to frustration, anger and abuse.
Child abuse can be prevented. As a community, we can support parents in their efforts to raise happy and successful children. We all play a role in protecting the children in our community as parents, grandparents, and neighbors regardless of what job we have from 9-5. The pinwheels, banners and signs on display in April remind us that raising children in safe, nurturing environments is a critical step to ensuring that children grow up to be healthy and successful adults.
We have designated Friday, April 5 as "Blue Out Day" to show support for child abuse
prevention. We encourage everyone to wear blue that day to show support for this
